Since calculators are not used during state testing, their usage is considered detrimental in California to learning or at least the evaluation of learning mathematics. However, do the the fast pace of the course you're taking, they are allowed. Please consider the following recommendations and opinions.
Single line calculators are almost useless; although research suggests, that students do learn their multiplication tables in using them.
A two-line calculator with a natural display is highly useful; almost mandatory. Several will be available for use by students in class. Purchasing one for personal use is a fairly wise expenditure. The Casio fx-300ES or fx-115ES, the TI-30XS Multiview, and the Sharp EL-W516B fit. If a student has a TI-83 or TI-84, then installing Zoommath greatly extends its usefulness. For students expecting to take AP Calculus or AP Statistics, the TI-Nspire should be considered for purchase and mastery.
